Does my phone support eSIM? โ€” complete Australian guide

7 July 2026ยทProost eSIM

Most modern smartphones support eSIM โ€” here's how to check yours

eSIM technology has been in smartphones since 2018. If you have a phone bought in the last three or four years, there's a good chance it supports eSIM.

How to check if your phone supports eSIM

The quickest way is to check your phone settings:

On iPhone: Settings โ†’ Mobile Data. If you see an Add eSIM or Add Mobile Plan option, your iPhone supports eSIM.

On Android: Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ SIM Manager, or Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ SIM Management. Look for an Add eSIM option.

iPhones with eSIM support

All iPhones from the iPhone XS (2018) onwards support eSIM, including:

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd gen, 3rd gen)
  • iPhone 12, 12 mini, 12 Pro, 12 Pro Max
  • iPhone 13, 13 mini, 13 Pro, 13 Pro Max
  • iPhone 14, 14 Plus, 14 Pro, 14 Pro Max (eSIM-only in Australia)
  • iPhone 15, 15 Plus, 15 Pro, 15 Pro Max (eSIM-only in Australia)
  • iPhone 16 series (eSIM-only in Australia)
  • Note: iPhones purchased in Australia from the iPhone 14 onwards are eSIM-only โ€” they have no physical SIM tray.

    Samsung phones with eSIM support

Most Samsung Galaxy S and Z series from 2020 onwards support eSIM, including:

  • Galaxy S20 series and later
  • Galaxy S21, S22, S23, S24, S25 series
  • Galaxy Z Fold and Z Flip series (most models)
  • Galaxy Note 20 series
  • Google Pixel phones with eSIM support

  • Pixel 3 and later support eSIM
  • Pixel 6, 7, 8, 9 series all support eSIM
  • Other phones with eSIM support

  • Most recent iPad models support eSIM
  • Some Motorola, Huawei, and Sony phones support eSIM โ€” check your specific model
  • What if my phone doesn't support eSIM?

If your phone doesn't support eSIM, you'll need a physical SIM card for your destination. Alternatively, consider upgrading โ€” most new flagship phones now support eSIM, and iPhones purchased in Australia are eSIM-only.

One more thing โ€” is your phone unlocked?

Australian phones purchased outright are usually unlocked and work with any eSIM. Phones purchased on a plan with Telstra, Optus or Vodafone may be locked to that carrier โ€” check with your carrier before buying an eSIM.
