How to set up an eSIM on iPhone โ€” step by step

30 June 2026ยทProost eSIM

Setting up an eSIM on iPhone takes about two minutes

If you've purchased a Proost travel eSIM (or any eSIM), setting it up on your iPhone is straightforward. Here's exactly how to do it.

Which iPhones support eSIM?

All of the following iPhone models support eSIM:

  • iPhone XS, XS Max, XR and later
  • iPhone 11, 11 Pro, 11 Pro Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd and 3rd generation)
  • iPhone 12 series, 13 series, 14 series, 15 series, 16 series
  • iPhones purchased in Australia from iPhone 14 onwards are eSIM-only โ€” they don't have a physical SIM tray.

    What you'll need

  • Your iPhone (XS or later)
  • Your eSIM QR code (delivered by email from Proost after purchase)
  • A wifi connection for the initial setup
  • Step by step โ€” adding your eSIM via QR code

  • Open Settings on your iPhone
  • Tap Mobile Data (or Cellular in some regions)
  • Tap Add eSIM or Add Mobile Plan
  • Tap Use QR Code
  • Point your camera at the QR code from your Proost email
  • Tap Add Mobile Plan when prompted
  • Follow the on-screen instructions to activate
  • Setting your eSIM as the data line

Once installed, you need to tell your iPhone to use the travel eSIM for data:

  • Go to Settings โ†’ Mobile Data
  • Tap Mobile Data (under the plan list)
  • Select your Proost eSIM
  • Turn on Data Roaming on the Proost eSIM line
  • Keep your Australian number active

Your Australian SIM stays in your phone and keeps receiving calls and SMS. The Proost eSIM handles data only โ€” this is the most common setup for travellers.

    Troubleshooting

If your eSIM isn't connecting after arrival:

  • Make sure Data Roaming is turned on for the Proost eSIM line
  • Toggle Airplane Mode off and on
  • Check Settings โ†’ Mobile Data to confirm the Proost eSIM is set as the data line
  • If still not connecting, contact Proost support
  • What about eSIM on Android?

Android setup varies by manufacturer. Generally you'll find eSIM settings under Settings โ†’ Connections โ†’ SIM Manager or Settings โ†’ Network โ†’ SIM Management. Look for an Add eSIM or Add Mobile Plan option.
